The Speak Up! Action Manual for Peer Leader Teams is designed for any youth who want to:

  • Learn about self advocacy
  • Practice tools for making choices and decisions about their future
  • Find support and resources about subjects that interest them

The Speak Up! Manual has activities, scenes/role plays, resources, and discussion ideas.

- Youth peer leader teams can use the Speak Up! Manual to work with other youths.

…Participate in the Marching Band (by Steven)

1) Try Out for Band Director
2) Be invited to Band Camp over the summer
3) Pass all your classes
4) Practice after school with your section
5) Perform at Varsity Football Games
6) Compete in available competitions
7) March in Christmas and Homecoming Parade with the rest of the band

…Wash Your Hair (by Jessica)

1) Let hair hang loosely
2) Take out accessories
3) Wet hair and dampen hands entirely with warm water
4) Squeeze a quarter size amount of shampoo into the palm of your hand
5) Massage the shampoo into scalp and hanging hair
6) Rinse and Repeat if Desired
(You may follow these same steps to condition your hair when finished shampooing)

…Wash Dishes (by Marcus)

 1) Empty the sink.
 2) Turn hot water tap on; if the water is too hot, cool it down with some cold water as to prevent burning yourself.
 3) Plug the sink.
 4) Pour a small amount of dishwashing detergent into the sink.
 5) Gently layer the dirty dishes into the sink; larger harder items first, smaller lighter items last. Do NOT put the sharp utensils in the warm water yet!
(example: empty pots and pans, large bowls, plates, glasses, cups, pot and pan covers)
 6) Wash the dishes one-at-a-time using a clean sponge.
 7) Rinse the dishes with warm water until each is squeaky clean.
 8) Lay the dishes out to dry on a clean surface or in a dish strainer.
 9) Put the sharp utensils in the warm, sudsy water.
10) Wash and rinse them carefully.
11) Immediately dry cleaned utensils with a dry cloth and put away.

SNOW CREAM (by Ashley)

1) Gather ingredients and supplies
          1 cup of thawed snow
          ¼ cup of granulated sugar or ½ cup of honey
          ½ cup of 2% milk or unsweetened soy milk
          Blender
2) Add snow and sweetener to the blender
3) Secure the lid
4) Pulse the mixture for a few seconds
5) Take off the lid
6) Add the milk slowly until it is entirely mixed
7) Secure the lid again
8) Blend the liquid until it is frothy and clumpless

…Clean Your Room (by Amber)

1) Clear your floor of everything except furniture
2) Fold or hang up your clean clothes and put them in a safe place
3) Make up your bed

  • Tuck your sheets into the bottom of your bed
  • Be sure that the sheets are spread out and smoothed as much as possible
  • Puff your pillows
  • Pull your bed cover over the sheets and pillows

4) Put your C.D.’s where they belong
5) Vacuum your carpet or use a dust mop to clean your wooden floor
6) Clean your mirror and glass surfaces with a wet cloth

…Make Rice and Tomatoes (by Ashley)

1.) Get what you need:
  • 1 cup white rice  
  • 1 pot              
  • 1 tablespoon salt 
  • 1 can diced or crushed tomatoes    
  • 2 cup water

2.) add water and tomatoes to the pot
3.) then add rice and stir occasionally
4.) bring to a boil, add salt
5.) cover the pot with the matching pot top
6.) turn the burner down to low, let simmer for 20-25 minutes
7.) uncover the pot and stir, the rice should be tender to taste and soupy
